What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese
healing technique that has successfully treated
people for over 2000 years. The technique of
medical acupuncture primarily utilizes needles to
contact the body’s own healing energy network.
These networks are called meridians. Meridians stream over
and through the body at deep and superficial
levels. Meridians are constantly moving healing
energy or Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) throughout the body
to maintain its balance and harmony. The scientific
or Western medicine explanation of acupuncture is
that the needling of a certain combination of
acupuncture points on the meridians stimulates the
body’s nervous system, circulatory system and immune
system to heal itself. Therefore, the body is
reprogrammed to heal using its own natural
abilities.
Can Acupuncture Help Me?
Acupuncture is an excellent
alternative medical healing method for those who
have found that medications or surgeries are not
totally addressing their health issues. Acupuncture
may be used as a complete treatment or an adjunctive
treatment for almost any medical condition. In our
practice both Dr. Christopher and Anastasia
Christopher incorporate the oldest Chinese
methodologies and the newest techniques in modern
medical acupuncture including:
Cosmetic Acupuncture - New
Cosmetic
acupuncture is a no-surgical approach to skin
rejuvenation. Cosmetic acupuncture leaves no inclusion
lines, swelling or extensive bruising. It will not
stretch or pull your skin unnaturally, and is only a
fraction of the cost compared to surgical facelifts.

Meridian acupuncture-
Primarily utilizing needles to contact the body’s
own healing energy network. These are called
meridians. The needling of a certain combination of
acupuncture points on the meridians stimulates the
body’s nervous system, circulatory system and immune
system to heal itself.
Surface energetics-
Also known as “Baldry technique”; involves placing
many needles in the afflicted area on a more
superficial level than regular acupuncture. This is
to stimulate movement of energy and release surface
restrictions that occur in the underlying
musculo-skeletal tissue.
Moxification-
i.e. “moxibustion” the use of an herb called “moxa” or mugwort that is
ignited and because of its heat conductivity and
gentle warmth transfers heat through the tip of the
needle into the body’s meridians. Used for many
different treatments and as an alternative to
electro-stimulation for patients with pacemakers.
Cupping-
The vacuum application of glass cups over an area of
musculo-skeletal pain. This can also be used to
relieve muscle tension. The Chinese believe it helps
relieve painful obstructions in the body’s meridian
network. This is a non invasive treatment.
Gua Sha-
A technique of scraping the surface of a body area
with smooth edged instruments; for example a
porcelain spoon. Cupping stimulates blood flow to
the area being scraped and thereby helps to relax
the muscles. This is a non invasive treatment.
Scalp acupuncture-
A newer Oriental method whereby the scalp is needled
and stimulated for many ailments but specifically
for neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s,
stroke, Parkinson’s etc…
Electrical stimulation-
Used alongside almost all medical acupuncture
treatments done at our office. It is the application
of very low voltage (about the equivalent of a 9
volt battery) to the needles to that mimics manual
stimulation of the needles (i.e. twisting) that
produces analgesic or pain relieving response.
Five Phases Therapy-
Is an advanced acupuncture treatment modality that
seeks to balance all 12 meridians in the body. This
is often used in conjunction with other modalities
of acupuncture.
Peripheral nerve stimulation-
The application of acupuncture needles in a specific
musculo-skeletal area that uses high intensity nerve
stimulation with an electric stimulator to eradicate
pain. This method has been a proven safe and
effective method to more quickly relieve deep pain.
Osteopuncture-
The application of needles into the surface of the
bone in order to relieve deep bone pain. This
incorporates the use of electrical stimulator to aid
the pain relief process in an expedient fashion.
Chinese Herbology-
The use of single or combined ancient herb formulas
in conjunction with other acupuncture treatments to
provide a prolonged and enhanced result for most
ailments.
Auricular Acupuncture-
The needling of acupuncture points within the ear to
generate greater or enhanced effectiveness of energy
movement within the body.
In Chinese medicine, the ear is seen as a
micro-system that represents the whole of the human
body. Stimulating these points during an acupuncture
session or applying semi-permanent band-aid needles
(very tiny needle within small flesh tone band aid)
after the treatment session continues the work of
the practitioner between treatments.
These
treatment modalities can be utilized to treat a
myriad of conditions. We have an ever expanding
list of medical issues that acupuncture can address.
Almost anything that can treated with Western
Medicine can be treated with acupuncture.
